Stunned-My Honors Student Shoplifted

I can't believe that I have to even wrtie this post, but here it goes.

My 15 year old daughter, honor student, all around good kid, usually stays at home, plays on her computer, and texts was caught shoplifting a tank top from JCPenney's. She and a friend (one who I know both the child and the mother) were dropped off at the mall by the girl's mother (against my rules-we do not hang out in the mall because of the trouble makers that hang out there) for an hour while the mother took care of some other things before meeting them to get her nails done. Anyway, the girls decided that taking a bra and a tank top (which my daughter already owns-so I don't understand why she took that) into the fitting room and slipping it into their bag was a good idea.

Needless to say, they got caught. The other girl texted her mom who was at the mall by then and she went to pick them up. Security decided not to press charges and released them to the mom. Then they called us and told us what had happened. Our daughter called us after they released them and told us what had happened. I almost died!

Anyway, our daughter admitted to the whole thing, did not place blame on her friend, and has accepted our punishment without argument.

Our punishment was loss of the computer, her cell phone, and the house phone. She is not allowed out except for school or if we are with her. She is not allowed to have contact with her friend (who told her mother on the way home that she had shoplifted once before). We have also told her she must write an apology/confession letter to JCPenney, the other girl's mother, and to us. She has one week to get all three done. She has agreed to all of our punishments. My question is have we done enough? Or is there something else we need to add? Her grades are great. She is a respectful kid and this is the first real trouble she has gotten into. I know she is remorseful. When we told her grandmothers, she was a mess. So, have we done enough?

I think the punishments are good. Sometimes kids just do dumb things. I know my sister lifted nail polish once and got into trouble but no charges were pressed. I would make sure she knows she is on the short leash for a while though. And keep an eye out for other signs of trouble. And ask about her relationships with other kids at her school. Maybe she was acting out to try and be cool or something dumb like that.
No trips to the mall unless attended by you for a long time though! She must understand that by doing this she has given you a very big reason to not trust her by herself. And stand by it.

Klmkm has given you good advise. Don't go overboard (you didn't..IMHO), and it is a fine line, or she'll rebel more. Why did she do it....to see if she could. Why did she do it...because she wanted to. WHy did she do it...who knows, maybe not even her. But ask her sometime when life is quiet and on an even keel, you may get an answer, and it may surprise you, who knows. You may not. SHe may not know.

jiggreen, Don't be discouraged by tuition at non ivy schools. You are lucky to be in PA, as Penn State is a great school for engineering and Computer science. However, if you son is a top student, he can get merit money at schools that are not in the top 50. There are many wonderful schools out there that can provide great educations and it doesn't have to cost a fortune. Check out Grove City College. It is small, but it has a good engineering program, and it costs about $16,000 a year -- total. My daughter was at the top of her class, and was admitted to more than one top universities. However, she received no merit aid, and our FAFSA said we could afford $45,000 a year (several years ago). Yeah, right. She also had a bright futures scholarship to a public school in Fl, plus full tuition scholarships to two different universities. We would have sent her to one of the top schools, but she would have had to pick up massive loans, or get a ROTC scholarship. She didn't want either, so she went to one of the full ride schools. She is happy, thriving, and has said more than once that she chose the best school for her. She does have the type of personality that adapts very well, so I think she would have done well anywhere. One of her best friends said that of all of their classmates she is the happiest. That includes those who are in the ivy league schools. She will graduate with no debt. With the outside scholarship that she won, our cost this semester was about $2000. Your son will have to decide several things before the searching begins. First, his major. If he is serious about engineering + computers, it doesn't make sense to look at schools that don't have it. Then, he has to decide whether he wants large, medium or small schools. Each has their advantages and disadvantages. Also, does he want urban, suburban or rural. Some of these things are important to the student, some aren't. Also, is going to a big sport's school important? Your son may not know the answers right now. He has to visit different campusses to decide what is important to him. Also, discuss finances with him now. Don't wait until he is accepted to his dream school to figure out that you can't afford it. Your son has some very good stats. Just remember that Harvard takes less than 10% of its applicants. They turn down tons of Validictorians and students with perfect SAT's. The same holds true of most of the top 25 schools. Getting in is a crap shoot. Do not let him get his heart set on an ivy league school. The big rule at College Confidential is "Love Thy Safety". Too many students applied only to top schools,and got in nowhere. There are more and more students applying to top schools every year. Really read the posts at CC. Look at andi and andison's story. He had top stats, and didn't get in anywhere. Have your son read College confidential. Make sure he doesn't have great disappointments next year at this time. There is a FAFSA estimator that will give you a rough idea as to what will be your expected financial contribution. You can have a low income, but high assets and be stunned by what you will be expected to contribute. You may not think that you can afford $34,000, but FAFSA may think otherwise. Be prepared. Gardeningmusician, I just wanted to say that I think you are a great person for not responding to an email while angry. I can tell from your posts that this school missed out in a major way by not hiring your husband. I guess I am kind of confused by their policy, because I feel like they are saying that Christians only send their children to Christian schools. They aren't turning an applicant away based on religious beliefs, but based on where his kids attend school. That little bit of information doesn't even begin to tell them about the person he is or what his religious beliefs are, if that is truly what they wanted to know. I just don't get it. For example, I personally think children can learn best how to be a true Christian by being in a public school environment. It is a great place for them to learn how to be compassionate for others, play with all kinds of children from many different backgrounds and just quietly lead by example. Character is tested every day in a public school. There are plenty of Christian families that are not in a Christian school. Also, not all Christians can afford to send their kids to private schools, but that does not mean they are less of a Christian. That school's policy is plain crazy. No one should decide who to interview based on where their kids go to school, how does that bit of information define us as a person? You have handled this situation with total grace.

I already commented on this house, and came back later to look more and read more. Beautiful. But I am very disappointed to read all the comments directed at the person who gave an unflattering review. I was hoping people would ignore and let it go, but since that's not happening, I'm going to throw something out here. Sooner is a class act. She did an awesome job with her home, she asked for help tweaking, and she took some advice. She also.........ignored those who either didn't share her taste or were having an 'off' day. Some here should do the same. Sooner does not need defending, most who posted seem to love what she's done. And I think it is most unkind to mock someone else's decorating, no matter what the provocation. If I say I hate Sooner's kitchen, will 20 people look up my kitchen and tell me how ugly it is? Not nice, guys. Give it a rest, please. Most sincerely directed at a lot of people I have grown to enjoy and respect... Red

I don't think I said anything about fault. I am only addressing the facts. Shunning is abuse. SD is engaged in shunning = abusive. SD is responsible for using abusive behaviour to solve her problem. Not good. parents need to parent to help child out of bad situation. If the situation were reversed and SM was shunning SD the responsibility would be reversed only it would be an adult engaging in emotional abusive and childish behaviour. But it is not. kkny, what good can come out of this if it is left to continue? What do you see as the outcome of this situation other than the distruction of a family? In the spirit of self disclosure. MY SD32 did this to our family 4 yrs ago. 6mo ago we she finaly agreed to go to family therapy. I finaly learned that what she held against me was... I said she was impulsive. She married a man who she did not feel she knew well enough to find out about his finances and stayed married for less then a year. This is only one example of her impulsivity. The year before she turned on me she bought tickets to a concert for us to attend together for my birthday. She rutinly asked for my advice, which I was reluctant to give. I probably did say that something she was planning on doing seemed impulsive to me. Was this justification for ruining our family? No. I wish her father would have steped in instead of going along with it and hoping she would come around. She actualy said he had to choose. Before all of this happened I thought we did have a good relationship. She refered to me as Mom. She made a point of spending time with me. The therapist refused to give us another appointment because she was still refusing to communicate so there was no point. The only thing he could do for us was to help us give up. He said that until she grows up emotionaly there is no hope. What I want to say to this family is do not condone this behaviour in any way. Dad needs to step in and put a stop to it before it goes any further. If the situation had been reversed and it were my children doing this to my husband, I would have been all over it. They know I would not put up with the disrespect to a man that has cared for them and supported them... He should have done the same but he was afraid of losing her...but that is exactly what happened.

My little brother once stole a mouse from the petstore. He was 15 also at the time. I think kids do this just because they want something and maybe dont the money at the time,it's a rush,and to see if they can(like vickey said).
It's a good sign she is remorseful. Also,she is probably embarrassed enough to not want to do it again.
Dont be too shocked,it is the good ones who can be the most bad!

I think it is an age thing. I was with some friends, at that age, who stole a watch. I was SO SHOCKED.. and even more, I was annoyed because I was with them and could have been implicated as well. Fortunately, for me, they didnt get caught but gave me a huge fright and it really taught me a lesson about who I hang out with.

What lessons do you think your daughter has learnt ?

You said she was remorseful, and took her punishments, I think she has acted like a real lady. I am sure it was impulsive, as someone else said.

There has been a lot of talk in the press about how young people's brains dont fully mature until they are about 25. Which means their emotional section of the brain is often very separate from their logic section.

How long are these punishments to last for ?

I think you should keep in mind that its the behaviour of your daughter (shoplifting) that you are upset with, and that you still love your daughter, and she is treasured.

If she is anything like my children, I am sure she is just heartbroken and feels aweful. Give her a hug and tell her you love her.

I am sure she has learnt a valuable lesson over this.

It is quite common, I think. My neices did the same thing, and they where actually taken to the local police station, and they police phoned my brother ! They only did it once !

Just a side note, do not send the JC Penny letter to them. You do not know where it ends up and how this would be used. In fact I would not give letter to the friend's mom either. Verbal apology is enough.

My delightful and very successful daughter was arrested at 14 for putting on an extra pair of jeans, along with her girlfriend, who did the same, and trying to walk out of the department store.
I had to go to the police station and pick her up and, like you, was horrified, mortified, scared to death, and certain all our lives were to be forever ruined.
She went to see a counselor for a few weeks, we made some friends changes, and punishments at home. It never happened again, and she grew up to be one of the smartest and sweetest people I know. So, take heart. All will no doubt be well.

I loved popi's response. I also agree with vickey...I wouldn't send the letters. If this is the most horrible thing your daughter has done, consider yourself lucky. Don't forget to tell her you forgive her and love her no matter what. We all make mistakes. Lesson learned.

I think it is time to re evaluate the friend. You have handled the punishment wisely, and so has she. You might still get the letters, but don't mail them.

This is practically a rite of passage with teenage girls, not that I am condoning it one bit. She is lucky it was dismissed. Most stores where we live prosecute and it's a $300 ticket, parent and child have to attend a series of education classes, get a tour of the the local jail "Tank", appear in a public court and privately before a judge and have their names in the paper. And that is just for a first offense. How do I know? Yep. Just once.
