Where is the Parents of teens site?!

Hi, new to this board. Seems my parenting skills have gone out the window with this teenager thing. I have a 15 yo girl. We moved a little over a year ago. I think she's finally gotten over the depression of that, but, she still seems to be floundering in the girlfriend department. She wants to be social, but one friend isn't. The other wants to get into too much trouble. It's hard to get other girls to ask her to join them. OR, she's turned into a negative grumpy teen who complains about everything and everyone. Especially teachers. And coaches.

If I make suggestions, I'm shut down. I don't want her to end up with a bad crowd.

Any advice on what's normal for teens?

#1 Parents of Teen site got shut down, too many Pervs visited it, so sad.

#2, much of what you describe is normal for teens, sadly. And much of that leads to bad crowds. If you can somehow get her into other crowds, that MAY help. We thougth on daughter who was going to church a lot and "seemed" to be hanging around with good kids (talked to the parents, etc), was doing well...NOT, those kids were hanging with kids doing drugs and with parents who didn't care. So it's hard to tell. So my only suggestion is to keep TALKING, not lecturing, open ended conversations. Do things with her, etc.

Thanks for the support. I had a feeling life was up to her now. It seems the lessons I taught her have gone out the window. And, I showed her real life friends who have screwed up their lives. Peer pressure seems so much more dominant than it did when I was growing up. I feel like they think life is like the "reality TV" shows she likes to watch. But, if all of their friends think that way, does it make it so? WWhat a horrible future of unnecessary "drama" they will have to look forward to.

I would say that there are about twice as many adoptees searching than birthparents. Many birthmothers feel that they have no right to search, that they gave up that right when they signed over their children. That does not mean that they don't want a reunion. Birthparents are more afraid of looking also because the adoptee might not even know they are adopted. A birthmother knows that she is a birthmother. It is far better and easier for the adoptee to search. Birthparents usually just came to our meetings just for support or in case their child was there. I also believe that unless it is an open adoption, it is best to wait until an adoptee is an adult and better equipped emotionally to do the search. Teen years are hard enough to survive. Yes, the truth is worth knowing. Honesty is important. Done correctly even though the news may be bad, it doesn't have to mean sad ramifications that can't be dealt with. LOL If I knew all you wanted was a huge inheritance, I would not help you with a reunion. We are talking emotional well-being here. When I did a search with an adoptee, we had many a talk on all of the what if's, I made sure that an adoptee had someone to go to for councilling if necessary. There was follow-up. It is your sister's right not to do a search. I respect that immensely. Just as I haven't passed on much in the way of information to my twin because she doesn't want to know. I have a scrapbook made for her about our birthparents and how I have done the search and the details. If she ever wants to see it, it is hers. I did it just in case something ever happened to me and she changed her mind. If she never wants to see it, so be it. It is her right not to know. BTW, Birthmothers are very special people. They did the best they could at the time. It isn't an easy decision to make, and for all the birthmothers out there, I give you a huge hug. It is far easier nowadays to keep children and far more accepting. Years ago, there was no support.

My kids are now 27, 24 and 21. They gave me lip in their teens also. IT IS THEIR JOB. They are starting to exert their independence. It is the parent's job to teach them how to exert (is that the word? I hope it is the right one, you know what I mean) it RESPECTFULLY, and they will not know if you do not teach them. GO TO YOUR ROOM, or whatever is fine, but more needs to go with it. My most proud day as a parent was when my then teenaged daughter, in the middle of a power struggle with me said "I don't like you very much right now". Not I HATE YOU, not other words that I'm sure she wanted to say, but "I don't like you very much right now". How respectful can you get? It meant that I was doing something right! Did she cause me grief at other times? OH YES (She was our wild child!). But we did survive. I now have 3 very wonderful adult children. (and Mother's curse works, my wild child has one of her own--HAHA), all who respect us and we respect them! I need to add, we had our moments too..the son walking away in the middle of my rant, and me following a 6'2" "boy" shaking my finger while yelling...I think the neighbors peed their pants, it loses some of the effect when he's taller than Mom. The grounding until their 30 (and then having to back off), and other--not so good moments, but we survived the teen years (and I have the gray hairs to prove it!!) Vickey-MN

yes, the oldest has add... which I work with to upteenth degree. We actually already have the homework rule... ours is more like even if you dont have homework you have homework... you have to review what you did in school that day to make sure that you understand everything. Which, is why I find it so frustrating that he or rather they lie about having homework. It is not like they get out of doing work, they just end up in trouble for lieing and not doing their homework. It is ridiculous in a lot of ways ... why spend an hour reviewing everything from the day when you could have spent 15 minutes doing the assignment the teacher gave you. They are just playing every angle that they can and unfortunately it's working on a lot of fronts and I am exhausted. For example: the kids were at their moms house this weekend. The oldest had a report to do. I meet BM at 6 monday morning to take kids to school and oldest didnt do his report. I asked if BM knew and he said "well I asked her if I should finish at your house and she said I guess so" Ofcourse I am highly irritated because we had a very specific conversation on satureday about what he needed to do. And, ofcourse, I make him sit there and do his report. But, to top off the entire deal I show DH what he didnt do... he gets onto oldest ss about it makes a big deal. But then I have to go to school that same evening (report did not get finished before school which I made sure DH knew) and I dont get home until after 9 and he didnt do the first thing on the report and DH says that he didnt realize what he needed to do. So, I end up staying up with ss until late late to make sure the report got done. And then, the next morning DH gives the grounded boys doughnuts even though it is his own rule that when grounded you dont get treats. I don't know... I feel like they are doing it to test me sometimes. It's not like anyone else is holding them to right and wrong and doing what they are supposed to do. (well I suppose that is unfair DH does back me up but i feel like if I didn't say this is the problem it wouldnt be brought up) Really, I honestly feel like they are testing how far they can push and I will still stand strong... but then I feel like maybe they are starting to have an attitude of you arent my parent that has never really been an issue before because they weren't teenagers. i tried to disengage tonight and just let DH handle everything but that sooo didnt work... it is not in my nature. I tired to busy myself in my room organizing... I didnt ignore them, I helped them with homework and answered questions but my goal was to make sure that DH made sure they got their homework done and made sure they werent just wandering around doing nothing... but i couldnt help it... I couldnt just watch oldest ss playing with the girls knowing that he had a stack of homework on his bed... ugggghhh it pretty much boils down to I am frustrated!!

I'm on a website looking at atv's and every single ATV I have come across has an "Important Safety Information" Pop-up on the page that says " Recommended for experienced riders 16 years of age and older. _____ recommends that all ATV riders wear a helmet, take a training course, and read their owner's manual thoroughly. Also here is a manual that I found online, please look at pages 7 & 12. www.etonamerica.com/PDF/EA%20ATV%20Rider%20Safety%20Handbook.pdf - Never allow a child to operate the ATV without adult supervision. (pg. 7) Never operate an ATV without wearing an approved helmet that fits properly. Can you make home a fun place for her to invite kids over, to help build some friendships that will extend into her school life. If there are kids she thinks are really nice at school, can she get to know them better by inviting them to do things? I think teens assume that everyone but them is out having a great time (and for some teens...perhaps this is true) but I think that there are alot who are also sitting at home, not really doing much. Can she try and build a few new friendships?

Ew,the teen board really got shut down because of too many pervs??? That is terrible!

lbelle,your teen sounds pretty normal.She wont want your advice because you are her "parent" and therefore deemed uncool.(dont worry,this wont last)
I do advise you though that if starts seeming too depressed or out of control to take her to a doctor.
Many teens can have a chemical imbalance brought on by all the hormonal changes and it can make them act like crazy people!
That of course is worst case scenerio.Just be supportive.Listen to her nag,tell her you love her,and leave it at that. If she really needs advice,she will ask you,but mostly teens just,"Want to be heard"

I know what you are going through. When my DD was 15 her behaviour mirrored what she saw on TV. She watched a lot of shows where the young people were so disrespectful towards their piers and the adults. I could see that was how my DD was behaving to me.

In my corner of the world, my children did go to a school that had very good discipline and they set a high standard of behaviour, one thing that impressed me was the boys had to stand back and let the girls through the door first. My DS is still at this school now. So a big proportion of the students are there because their parents seek out that sort of school.

I think the suggestion of your daugher asking people over is a good idea. Just talk to her, ask her about her day, be her good role model.

I know its very hard, particularly when they just really don't like you ! Its like tip toeing through a mine field. You never know when the mine will go off, and you don't know what the damage will be.

And of course we are punching bags, like one of those blow up clowns that you punch and then they pop back up !

Sorry about all tha analogies !

I am sure things will get better, I think she is over the worst of it.
