Are Your Cards Appreciated?

I've been reading the old posts and ran across a comment by our Minnie in regard to the question - do people really appreciate home made cards? Minnie said, "I was always going to have a stamp made that said '$32 a card' to stamp on the back of my cards - haha."

I ran across a similar response in one of the many card crafting books I've checked out of the public library recently. Can't remember which book, but the card had this imprint on the back:

"Enclosed is a HANDMADE CARD. As such it deserves a place of honor and respect in your home and should not be casually discarded like an ordinary store-bought card."

I think I'll start putting that on MY cards - LOL!!

Did you ever get your $32-a-card stamp made, Minnie??

Do you think your cards are appreciated, after all the time and effort you put into designing, thinking of a verse, gathering materials, carefully planning, cutting, pasting, embellishing, etc.?

I must have missed Minnie's post, but that's a great idea! Store bought cards usually have the price on the back, so why not put a price, which includes the cost of your labor, on the back of a homemade card? I think that's brilliant! I usually put "Specially Made for _______, by MaryAnn" on the backs of my cards in a pretty font.
I make computer generated cards and put lots of time and thought into them. One of my best friends is not very computer literate, but she makes her cards using all kinds of things and they are beautiful. I love and appreciate every one that she sends me!

since i am in a group that makes cards and exchanges them regularly. i would have to say yes they are. i always get a postitive post about them including a comment on what part of the card is their favorite. i too use the computer for fonts, along with anything else i can find to embellish them. here is one of the sites i have them posted on. Since all the women in my family are artistic, and some of the men too....Dad always did woodworking...everyone in my family prefers something handmade. A handmade item shows love, and that you actually thought about the person you are giving it to rather than rushing into a store at the last minute to grab something to give as a gift. I believe that if you actually make something that is high quality, there is no matching it with something store bought. The gifts that mean the most to me are the ones that someone made specifically for me. I have a fleece blanket that my sister-in-law made several years ago. It has gotten me through many hours of illness, and cancer treatments. Everytime I wrap it around my shoulders, it feels like a hug because I know that she made it for me with love. A store bought blanket would never feel the same. I have beautiful crocheted lace doilies that my aunt made for me. She is getting older and I know that those can never be replaced after she is gone. I have Christmas ornaments that my children and other family members have made for me. Every time I put up my tree for the holidays, I remember who I recieved them from and what was going on in our lives at the time. These are all things that you can't give or recieve with store bought items. I have a wooden napkin holder that my dad made for me. There is a story behind it of something that happened while he was making it that I will remember every time I use it. Dad is gone now and I will never have another thing that he made for me. I know that he had me in his heart while he worked on it. I know that I am not the only one in my family that feels this way. I have listened to the stories of where a special gift came from many times. TooMuchGlass, Please keep giving those handmade gifts! Even if they don't seem to appreciate them now, I believe that over time, they will mean the world to your loved ones. If not, then they are really missing out on what is important in this life.

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions!! I was thrilled this morning to see so many responses!! Lake Erie is actually my back yard, about a quarter of a mile away, but unfortunetly can't see if because of the wooded property behind me. I know it's there though!!! kswl, you didn't offend me. I appreciate everyone's thoughts. I had hoped since I live so close to the lake that I could make the nautical work because it added the color I thought the space needed. Squirelhaven, I agree that the screen needed to come up or something needed to be on top of it. I had a flag draped across the area above last year(double sided tape!), but knew that introducing Americana with what I all ready had wasn't right. Also, thanks for adding the cat! I have five rescues in the house that would love to garden with me, but I don't like to take a chance since the road is so close. They can only watch from the slider. Cooperbailey, I live in zone 5 so my growing season is so short. I try to cram everything in three short months. The building you see in the background is our old garage before we built one onto the house. I do have a smaller grapevine star that I will try. Thanks! The nautical things came to be in my quest for trying to add some color and fun. I can see where it could be too much. I added the oars so the bland posts would have some excitiment. The buoys just kinda followed and I see where it is possibly too much. The bakers rack is hard to put flowers on because it doesn't get much light there. That space was hard for me to do, too, but I will work on more color there. My camera card is full so if I can figure out how to delete some pics I will add a shot of the bakers rack. I can't move the palm any closer or behind my chair because the chairs swivel and recline. I was thinking of getting a large talavera sun and hanging it in the space between the shutters and the palm. Shhhh, don't tell my husband!! I have always liked hanging ferns on a porch and I have two at both ends, but didnt' do the middle because we have eagles flying over the lake and my husband loves to see all glimpses of them if possible. Nothing can block his view!! Luckygal, paintchips and texashottie, natal, dgmarie, thanks for your ideas and comments about my garden. It is good to have fresh eyes look at a space that I have been dealing with for some time. We have never had a patio or a place to relax before and I am in overdrive to make it nice. Oldbat2be, that looks awfully dangerous! I stopped sending out cards many, many years ago, and now hardly get any. When we were still in the child rearing stage, we got tons of photo cards and I left them in a pile for everyone to look through. Now we get cards mainly from shops and dentists and a few photo cards from young relatives. We did get a card this year from old friends that had a picture of their kids on the front--- now in their mid twenties--- and I have to admit it liooked the tiniest bit creepy, sort of Twilight Zone-y............ ......(Rod Serling voiceover) .........here you see Jane and Tom, trapped forever on the front of their parents' Christmas card.....

Sigh, the only gift card I received was from my brother for Home Depot - and he put it in a three dimensional maze I had to solve before I could get to it. come to think of it they do have lots of gardening and how-to books. I only gave books to a teenage first cousin, once removed. He has started reading science fiction so I gave him two Heinleins -- Red Planet, a juvenile, and The Door into Summer which the grandfather he never knew loaned to me when I was a kid. And Bester's The Stars My Destination which is currently my "best science fiction book ever written." We will see how he likes the classics. Woodnymph, sorry to say L'Engle's Certain Women has been completely forgotten by me except for the title -- and that is probably from seeing it on the shelf. Rosefolly, I'd love that Edith Head book myself. I remember reading a fascinating bio of her decades ago. Have I ever mentioned to you that the dvd of Double Indemnity has some extras about the costume design. Apparently Stanwyck had a broad behind that Head had to design for. Who knew?

I have that stamp.

Some people appreciate them and others don't. It is the same with any craft. My sister made beautiful 1" = 1' miniature rooms and someone asked once "What do you do with them?" Can you believe it. What do you do with a famous painting?
I don't do much in card making anymore since no one around here is "into" it.
I do have a friend who tells me that she has all of my cards on her mantle. The Kitchen Table is doing a Christmas card exchange and I've signed up for that, maybe that will get me going again.

I do appreciate the homemade cards, but do not get too many, so can keep those. but it is like any other project, there is a limit on how long does a person keep the item, where does it get stored and what happens when we move. In cleaning out items, I try to find a new home, that is someone or some organization to recycle the item.

Some people do and some don't. I have given up making masses of Christmas cards; now I make just a few and they go to people who appreciate them.

My daughter has all of my cards all over her apartment. Another friend has a special box where she keeps all of my work. My friends who also stamp enjoy them. It's nice to feel appreciated. :-)

Next year why don't we participate in a Card Swap?? Like we do over at the Kitchen Table. It could be fun and spur us on to do creative things. We could do it for each holiday too if we wanted.

I'd say it's like anything else ... the person has to understand that it's something that should be appreciated. I make all sorts of crafts, so I DEFINITELY appreciate handmade cards when I receive them. And my son's teacher stopped me in the hall to comment how much she liked her Christmas card. Conversely, I just made one for my 25-year-old male cousin for his graduation, and I doubt he'll notice anything beyond the cash in it. But I enjoyed making it and so I don't mind.

To be fair, someone could pour me a $500 glass of wine, and I wouldn't know it from the boxed wine I keep in the frig! LOL! So do it because YOU like it, and maybe save yourself the effort on those that you're pretty sure won't even notice.

I just wanted to add what came to mind - that years ago I made umpteen quilts for many family members and not one person really appreciated it. I discovered them in a camper, used under the car to lay on the cement.........so I don't do that anymore. They would all think even less of saving a card. RAA

Other than from my kids, I have only received one handmade card. I was very pleased as I knew she made cards and hoped someday she would make me one. I still have it.

Give the cards (or quilts) only to those you think will appreciate them. The idea of the whole thing is to extend good wishes, which I think would be spoiled by a stamp stating the card deserves a "place of honor." It's not "about" the card, it's about their birthday, illness, anniversary, or whatever.

I have a stamp that is a barcode and has "priceless" below it. I agree, it is about the persons birthday, etc., and doing something special for them.
