Catalyzed Lacquer failure?

Our kitchen cabinets have been installed for three months. Yesterday I noticed that the finish on the doors under the sink has cracked and chipped. It's obviously damage from some water that dripped down, but I'm surprised, given that the cabinet maker was supposed to use a catalyzed lacquer finish. Isn't that supposed to be more rugged than this? Your thoughts??

Also, looking at the wood underneath, and the way that the paint has chipped away, it doesn't look like it was primed. Is primer normally used as a base coat for this type of finish?

Our GC is coming over tomorrow evening to look at the damage. He'll have the doors repainted, but I'm very concerned about the fragility of the paint job throughout the kitchen.

Much Thanks.

Here's an overall view of that portion of the kitchen. The blue tape is where some paint touch up was needed.
