Seeking white ceiling / did Valspar Fresh Cotton change?

Hi painting gurus! This is so mysterious - in 2010, I painted all our trim and LR ceiling with Valspar Fresh Cotton (CI199)

At the time, it was a bright white. I just bought a new gallon of Fresh Cotton matte paint (new label Valspar) and painted two coats on a BR ceiling (over BM Linen White) - and it is absolutely a light yellow vanilla. In my photo, you can see the old 2010 trim compared to the new 2014 ceiling. (the gray is BM Sidewalk Gray at 50%)

I checked the Valspar website and other websites, and it is now appearing as a creamy yellow - yet I am looking at the cans side by side and they don't match at all. I guess it could be a) the formula changed b) the old White Linen ceiling is changing the tone c) the guy who mixed the paint didn't use the same formula as 2010?

Anyway, I went back to Lowes and got what I thought was a brighter white - tried French Bistro Valspar and it's absolutely pink.

Back to the drawing board: I am seeking a white matte for the ceiling that matches what used to be called Valspar Fresh Cotton - perhaps I upgrade to BM Simply White or BM Super White?

The Paint AND Colorants have changed!

Paints almost change yearly, or with mild tweaks from time-to-time!
Colorants have changed from Glycol-based, to largely Low-Voc Acrylic versions. We got converted last year! New tinters, software, calibrations, new colors, new formula's, new chip-racks, etc.

NOTHING stays the same for too long in paint. The new colorant system was the biggest change in 20 yrs. though.
We can't even tint Oil-paints anymore!!

It seems odd that a color call Fresh Cotton would have that much of a yellow tone. You might want to put a dab of it on a new chip of that color and see if you received the right paint.

BM Simply White is a nice clean white. I know it isn't what you were going for, but I must say, I like the slightly yellow tone with the gray.

Hi Faron79 and Graywings, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I appreciate the insights on the change in colorants. And Graywings, I agree, it is possible we had a mis-tint at Lowes - but we were able to exchange the can so I can't be sure now. I am off to go explore the paint chip display at BM again today. Thanks for the advice, you folks are so helpful to me and many others!
