How to distress paint

I thought there would be a discussion on this but am unable to find one. Please point me to the right place if I've missed it.

I want to paint some pieces of furniture and a kitchen island, with the distressed antique look. I think there is some sanding through paint involved in this, or removing the paint while it's still wet? You know, the old beat up faded paint look like it's 200 years old. Am thinking of using milk paint, if that will help with the look.

Thank you for any help you can offer.
