Staining Unfinished Rubberwood Cabinets; HELP!

| I'm supposed to have these things stained already! ACK!
We're adding 2 cabinets to our kitchen, and rearranging some others to create a peninsula. The cabs are rubberwood, and they no longer make the stain. So, I've managed to scrounge up almost half a quart of the stain. I have NO experience staining, but not at all worried-I just want to be sure I'm getting it done as close to professional as I can in my garage, and I don't waste ANY stain. Can someone please lay out the step-by-step Staining for Dummies, keeping in mind that these are rubberwood.
These are being installed Wed. morning...the countdown begins! |

| I have never stained rubberwood, but I imagine it is like staining any wood. You want to get yourself a brush or a staining pad if the surfaces are large. You can also use a rag to apply the stain. You will want to lightly sand the wood before applying the stain to remove grease, mill glaze, dirt, finger prints, etc. I would do this with a fine grit sanding block. There are really two ways to stain....slap it on and wipe it off or spread the stain on evenly without wiping. Which application method you use will likely depend on what the cabinets you are trying to match look like. Wiping the stain off will result in a lighter color than if you were to leave the stain on. Also, wiping the stain off is easier for novices to do. After the stain is dry, you will want to apply a sanding sealer. Let that dry, sand with your fine grit sanding sponge, dust off and then apply two coats of poly or varnish of your choice. |
