PLEASE listen to my problem with cabinets!

5 yrs. ago we built this house and I had the wooden cabinets sprayed with a FLAT oil based enamel in Sh.W. Alabaster. Now they show wear and need painting. Sh.W. says they never had a flat oil based paint! I know they did but no point in argueing. NOW WHAT?? Can I put a latex over it? Should I go with Ben M. Dulamel? Can that be custom matched? I am so mad at myself having them painted in the first place, but I wanted a contemporary look. Is there any help out there?

Don't know much about paint, but we painted with latex over oil-based painted trim 6 years ago and it peeled from the beginning. Good luck with your cabinets!

Perhaps your painters used Dulamel matched in SW Alabaster color? I don't remember anyone other than BM even having a flat oil based paint so your Sherwin Williams store is probably right. You can paint over your oil based paint with a latex as long as you sand really well. The sanding dulls the slick surface which will create some tooth for the latex coating to bond with. You could also use a bonding primer.

OK how does this sound? I sand with 220 grit, then paint with Impervo or Cabinet Coat with a natural bristle brush. I worry about brush marks. I'm thinking of going from Alabaster to Cream. Maybe the flaws won't show up as much. I wish it came in eggshell tho. Thanks for the advice!

Sanding the cabinets lightly to a smooth surface, finishing them with a quality oil based paint thinned a small amount if necessary and applied with a china bristle brush will result in nice looking durable cabinets. Many times you will find that brush marks are related to paint being applied to thick or heavy. The type brush used for the job is also important.

Just keep in mind the oil will yellow over time.
