undesireable results from paint sprayer

Can anyone tell me why the finish is looking dull in spots and shiney in spots? This is my first time using a sprayer and I'm using a sprayer that attaches to a compressor and it seems to work really well except for the finish and I'm guessing as a novice I'm doing something wrong. I'm using BM semi gloss to paint pantry shelves (practice before tackling more important visible pieces). I thinned the paint with water (about 5%), it goes on well, no problems. I'm painting white on off-white so it's kind of hard to tell exactly what coverage I'm getting plus the lighting isn't the best. It has dried overnight so I expected it to all be dry enough to be an even sheen.

It could be any number of things. Low qualty sprayers will spray with an uneven spray pattern so the paint will not be applied evenly. It could also just be a matter of needing another coat. If the shelves are flat and porous, then the paint will soak in unevenly...the second coat should look much better if that is the case. I prefer to fog the paint on with the sprayer instead of just laying on one big heavy coat...this way you build up the paint film in small layers to fill in all the voids.

Thanks paintguy. These shelves are a low grade wood, pretty rough with knot holes, etc. but they had been painted before and I'd guess a semi-gloss or maybe high gloss. They still have a sheen just scratched, chipped and dinged. After spraying the shelf lightly about three times, they feel really rough rather than the smoothness that gloss paint gives, like it has raised the wood fibers and still has the dull/shiney spots. I'll sand it down and wipe it real good tomorrow before giving it a couple of new thin coats. If it's rough again, I assume it's something wrong with the sprayer or my technique. I know I'm doing very light coats because I haven't seen any spots where the paint has run or sagged. I really don't care about these shelves as they won't be seen, just want to get the technique and experience before I try to do a furniture piece or my 20+ louvered doors, lol! Those I do want to look really nice.
