Painting a New Black Dining Table White

I have a brand new pedestal dining table (made of rubber wood) which is black...it needs to be white.

I'm thinking that sanding it lightly with a 220 sponge, then priming with Gripper primer, then painting it with 2 coats of latex might be the fastest and easiest.....OR.....Should I use a de-glosser/liquid sander and then prime and paint? Would one way be better than the other?

I should mention that I detest primer, but going from black to white, I guess I'm stuck with it.

Also, It has a lovely grain on the top and I'm afraid I will lose the grain after primer and 2 coats of paint. Any ideas on keeping the grain?

Note: I really don't want to deal with an oil based paint.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
