painting stained furniture?

We have a wood coffee and end table that are stained and poly'd (I think?) now and I would like to change them to black. I bought ebony stain this weekend and some sand paper per the instructions on the back of the stain. I did a small corner of the coffee table and it was really light? Not sure if I didnt sand enough, I have to do 10 coats of stain or what exactly the problem is....I'm thinking of just painting it black. Any tips? If I do paint it should I prime first? T.I.A

Stain will not work over an already sealed surface. Stain requires fresh wood to make a difference.

Yes. You can paint it black. Graham Paints makes a black, (according to Moonshadow) and that will work for you too.

The surface will need to be clean and dull before you paint. Use a #220 to dull the surface, vacuum it and wipe with mineral spirits. Let it dry, then paint.
