patching a wall, painting - different texture

We've been slowly repainting our house and thanks to little children, we have a ton of dents, holes, etc. in our walls. We patch them, sand them, prime them, but every time we paint over the spots, the texture is different from the rest of the wall. It drives me crazy. I am getting ready to paint our dining room and it's a very visible area, so I'd love to learn proper patching technique. What are the best tools to use? Are we doing something wrong? Thanks!

What spackle compound are you using?

It needs to dry thoroughly prior to sanding and priming. Be sure it's sanded flush with the wall. When finished sanding, there shouldn't be any spackle on the wall, just what is filling the damaged area.

Try priming it with a 4" roller cover instead of a brush.

BTW, when sanding a wall patch, be sure to use a sanding sponge or sanding block.

If you do it with fingers, you're more inclined to cause a divot which will be very obvious beneath finished paint.
