I'm thinking of doing the same to my countertops, as a temp, experimental solution until we can get real stone counters. I was surfing the web looking for ideas and info and found your post.

As a painter, I was thinking of using acrylic paints and glaze mixed in for some colors to give it translucence in some areas. Similar to faux effects on walls using latex and glaze. I would also finish with several coats of a high gloss clear.

I don't think stains would work well for a stone look.

If I think about it I'll post my results here when I finish my project.
