what kind of tape to prevent peeling off old paint?

I used the blue painter's tape on the 2 year-old painted wall, while painting a new layer on the cabinet, perpendicular to the wall. I used a utility knife to cut a straight line where the blue tape meeting the cabinet to prevent any new paint on the tape connecting to the cabinet. The cutting did not help. Instead, the old paint was just peeled right off when I lifted the blue tape.

What kind of tape do I use to prevent peeling off the old paint? I heard that the creamy white contractor's masking tape is better than the blue painter's tape. I am wondering how the green tape (in a fancier wrapping style and more expensive) works too.

Thanks
