Popcorn Ceiling Painting

hald

My home was built in 1983 and has non-asbestos popcorn ceilings. I had the popcorn removed in the vaulted living room, and my study also has a plaster look knockdown type finish, so I live with both types, and, unlike others, I like my popcorn ceilings, mainly because they make the rooms quieter. I am redoing my kitchen dining area, which has a popcorn ceiling, and have decided to paint it a color.

The ceiling was last painted 12 years ago with a premium latex flat wall paint. It has stood up extremely well, so I'll probably use the same brand, etc.

Do I need to use a primer before applying colors? Or is the previous coat of white latex wall paint sufficient? It is in good condition and reasonably clean.
