What species of wood? If it's yellow pine, I strongly recommend roughing up the surface with a pad sander and 80-100 grit paper to break the "mill glaze" and give the primer some texture to adhere to. Thin the primer with a bit of turpentine. Back prime it as well. And prime the cut ends as you nail it up.
If it's a better material, like cedar or redwood, still prime the cuts, can't hurt.

Choosing the type of paint you must first look at the characteristics of the premier. For best result first you paint the surfaces within a week after premier. Premier is often in used with painting many kinds of porous.
