Patching trim before painting

I am in the process of renovating my newly purchased 103 year old home. It had been sorely neglected and abused for the last 30 years.

I am planning the prep work that will be required before painting all of the trim. The trim was stained a VERY dark color several decades ago and since then has been nailed into, screwed into, and generally punctured all over. In many places it looks like swiss cheese. That said, what do people recommend for patching? Wood filler? Any particular brand? I plan to fill, sand everything, clean, prime, then paint.

I'm open to all suggestions!
