Stripped Top Layer of Dry Wall

I was stripping wall paper off of my bathroom walls this afternoon. Obviously, the prior owner didn't prime the walls before putting up the wallpaper. What a mess! I was pulling one of the panels of wallpaper and the top layer of the dry wall came with it. It's a very large area. Do I have to take down the dry wall and have it done again? If I grab onto another piece of wallpaper, that layer of drywall is right there with it.

You don't need to replace drywall, but it will be a lot of work skim coating over where the paper facing of the drywall used to be. Before patching over it, seal the area with Gardz to prevent bubbling of the patching compound.

Thanks paintguy. Should I seal that area now before I continue with stripping the rest of the room. I am using a lot of water to get this paper off.

I don' t see why that would be needed. Finish all the stripping then give it a quick sanding, then seal it.

Could you be more specific about. the top layer of drywall.
Seems to me, if you took off the outer layer of paper on the drywall and the gypsum is exposed, the structural integrity has been compromised.

The paper facing actually has a backside to it that looks like shredded cardboard. Usually what happens is you strip off the paper of the drywall and expose that before getting to the actual gypsum.
