How To Fill In T&G Cracks?

I have a tongue and groove ceiling that can not be removed nor covered. My only option is to paint but I don't care for the cracks that become so noticeable when painted. Is there a way to fill in the cracks before painting? Ideally I'm looking for a thick substance that can coat the boards which is paintable. Hubby says filling with caulk won't work. Any ideas?

Try a caulk with more solids. I have had better results with "Big Stretch" caulk for problem areas, than cheaper painter's caulks. It's worth the money.
The wood is going to shrink/swell seasonally. There are few things that can prevent that entirely. It can be minimized by back-painting before installation, but that ship has sailed. I'd suggest oil enamel instead of waterborne.
