Stain again or paint?

Just bought a house the woodwork in the master bath is faded an dull the stain needs to be redone or something.

Should I stain this again an maybe put a clear gloss of some type over it to help protect from the steamy water from the shower OR use a good high gloss paint an paint the woodwork (trim) I will be painting the trim in kitchen as it's already painted an needs it again an could use the same color in kitchen an bath.

Sounds like someone may have used stain and only stain. Consider stain with a top coat of poly or varnish to protect it AFTER testing for porosity [drops of water, do they soak in?].

I would stain again and put a sealer on top.
