Painting Bilco Door

Good Morning All!

We have a Bilco basement door that is in dire need of painting. It has rusted through a small area on the side. My teenage son has thoroughly scraped it, and will use the power sprayer on it to clean. Does he need to prime it before painting? DH says it was primed already by the manufacturer, but with the rust and alll, I'm just not sure. Any pointers would surely be appreciated. TIA!

RE: Painting Bilco Door

You must prime it for adhesion. Metal is non-porous substrate and needs all the adhesion help you can give it. Rusty Metal pimer and two coats of exterior latex will do the job.

The areas of active rust will return by year end.
