Priming a stained piece of furniture

I bought an antique desk, sawed it in half and am making it into two nightstands. I started off by sanding it well, filling the holes and painting it antique white with my DIY chalk paint (plaster of paris mixed with paint). Unfortunately, orange blotches of stain started to come through. After researching online they said to cover with oil based stain blocking primer. I consultied with my mom (she's a professional interior painter) and she said to buy a latex stain blocking primer. So I went to lowes today and bought Kilz Premium High Hide Stain Blocking Latex Primer, because I don't want to deal with the smell of oil based primer. I did one coat and the orange blotches are still coming through. Should I do another coat of the primer and see how it covers from there or should I try painting a small section with my chalk paint and see if the primer did a good enough job? I really don't want to spend more money on a oil primer or deal with the smell!
