Douglas Fir Front Porch Flooring Paint???

Getting mixed messages here! Thought I had figured out that before I have the Douglas Fir floorboards installed, I should prime them completely with oil based primer. Then, paint two coats of porch paint.

Is this not correct? And any brands better than others? I get good discounts at Sherwin-Williams, but I want a paint that is going to last, so whatever is best.
