| Hello! I have an inexpensive painting that I would like to "antique" with a faux finish. I have in mind the kind of finish that really old oil paintings get, where the finish is slightly crackled, and tiny bits of dirt and dust have settled in the cracks.
I've read through the bazillion web sites explaining how to crackle finish, but since I want the whole painting underneath to show through, that's not really helpful, since my top coat won't be a solid color. The painting was done with craft-quality acrylic paints. Any suggestions on how to do this? Would it be possible to try a crackle finish with Elmer's glue, and use a top coat of a very pale water-based stain? Has anyone done anything like this? |

| I remember reading about doing this using a tea color shellac/varnish. Was awhile ago and I cannot really remember what they used though. |

| Check art stores - they have clear crackle finishes. Then you wipe a clear brownish glaze into the cracks. |

| I recall reading that you can turn a poster into a fake oil painting by applying Decopague (sp) finish in wide, choppy strokes. Not exactly what you're asking, but may be worth experimenting with. |

| With your painting or artwork , to ensure you won't have any damage to the actual print or any color bleed or color fade, I would suggest you put a protective seal over the artwork first; dry thoroughly and then do your clear crackle size and finish. I use Color Seal. It has very low co-solvents that won't harm the art piece. good luck. |
