Preparing and painting horse hair walls

Hi. We live in a 1790 home;hence, awful wall-papering(many layers), and cracked walls. Upon removing said wallpaper, horse hair plaster is revealed. Does anyone know the best way to repair the cracks and prepare the walls prior to paint? In addition, what is the best type of paint to use. Thank you.

Lisa
