In the basement of our home we have older style ceiling tiles, they are made by Armstrong now, they generally come in 12X12 and are stapled on.

We replaced a few tiles that had been damaged when the previous owner replaced the light fixture. Now the tiles aren't all the same colour and we would like to paint.
My question is, does anyone have any experience painting these types of tiles? Can it be done without taking them down (method suggested when I searched online)? It's for a TV room in the basement so were not looking for perfection, Down the road when the more important projects get out of the way we will replace the tiles with drywall but we were hoping for a quick fix by painting them for the time being.
