How do you remove gel stain from window hardware?

We had our new wood windows stained dark walnut. The painter didn't bother to remove the hardware so now there is thick dried stain that needs to be cleaned off the hardware. The window hardware has a metallic brown finish. Any recommendations on how to remove the stain without damaging the hardware finish?

If it hasn't been too long, paint thinner. Lacquer thinner will work faster, I don't know if it will damage the finish on the hardware...usually it's not an issue. Do I dare suggest you call the painter and have him come remove the stain?

The painter is out of commission. I guess I can test a lock that is damaged and needs to be replaced anyway. Thanks
