Trying to remove wall paper for painting

i hope this is the right spot, i just made an account.
well i'm trying to remove wall paper in a 30 year old house. I got 2 rooms left. It's vinyl wall paper, and overall it seems to be going well. It seems like the adhesive is mostly on the edges of the paper and not all over it (if that makes sense). SO there are these strips of glue/gunk in certain areas that wont come off (they're like 1/4" thick).
also, the wall paper is next to the kitchen cabinets, and it's hard to get a nice clean scrape off with the cabinet. There's also a trouble spot next to the kitchen vent hood. do i just razor off the wall paper next to the cabinet/hood and then continue, or do i have to take off the hood?
i'm using the fabric softener idea by the way.
Thank you for all your help!
blessings :D
