Painting interior steel, suggestions please

We have a steel spiral staircase that needs to be painted, badly. I use acrylic latex to paint anything not moving but it doesn't do well on these stairs. I want to use oil based or automotive quality but dear wife is bothered by the lingering smell of oil based.

Other than covering the treads with wood or vinyl do we have any suggestions?
