Smoke from Fireplace

We have 18' ceilings in our hearth room which is attached to the kitchen. Three years ago we painted the room BM Berkshire Beige and loved it. However, since our fireplace insert is "vintage", on windy days, smoke sometimes backs up into the room. This in turn has discolored our lovely paint job. Painting an 18' wall and ceiling is not that easy of a DIY for me.
Barring replacing the fireplace insert which would be around $6K... any other recommendations on:
1. Wall color that doesn't show smoke as easy
2. Paint that resists smoke adhering to it
3. Ceiling color
