prepping cedar shingles for restain

We have a two-story house sided with cedar shingles. We are planning to restain it this summer. I am wondering what prep work we need to do. Do we power wash and apply a wood brightener? Or just power wash?

We have a small power washer that works well to wash our decks and patios but I wonder if we should rent a larger one for this project. However, I don't want to damage the shingles. Any thoughts?
