Painting faux brick paneling

We bought a house that has faux brick paneling in one bedroom. It is very dark reddish brick with "black mortar". What kind of primer do I use? I will paint a very light color on the paneling and do I need two coats of primer? Right now that room is cave like.

First and MOST important is getting it clean. After that 1, one, coat of a quality bonding primer( Zinnsers 123 or Cover Stain) followed by 2 finish coats of quality paint.
This would mean a trip trip a real paint store and not HD
