Hi, I have a old not "real" wood piece of furniture that I need to repurpose for my daughter. I bought a kilz primer tinted to the color I want. I was reading on the internet, and now I see everyone seems to be suggesting another primer, that is not water based. Will what I have work good enough? Also, do I need to sand first, or do I need to buy something else?

Yes, sand first. Dulling the surface will promote adhesion of the primer. I like to use BIN because it sticks the best to slick surfaces. You can also use a high quality acrylic bonding primer like BM's Fresh Start. Kilz is probably the worst choice for bonding. It's mainly a stain killer.
