Painting new shiny brass hinges

opphop

In our renovation of a big old farmhouse, we had our Amish cabinetmaker friend create 14 new interior doors and transoms. He used shiny brass hardware on all of them, and it just doesn't go with the 125 year old character of the house. Which is better - prime and paint the hinges to match the door color, or use a Rustoleum metallic spray coating in something antique-y like oil rubbed bronze which is the hardware he used on other cabinetry?
