Entrance to 2nd floor garage storage

I am repainting the bonus room over the garage. There is a small opening to access storage over the front of the garage. It is approx 2.5 x 3.5 and has a piece of wood screwed into the opening. It is also trimmed out nicely. Currently the whole thing is painted the same color as the wall but I have seen pictures of others that are painted the same trim color (white) of the room and the door panel is that same color.

Which is the most common way to paint this area?
