I read this and thought it was worth sharing. I felt as though I was reading an article about my own life.

A Typical Mother

Mom and Dad were watching TV when Mom said, "IÂm tired, and itÂs getting late. I think IÂll go to bed." So she went to the kitchen to make sandwiches for the next dayÂs lunches, rinsed out the popcorn bowls, took meat out of the freezer for supper the following evening and prepared the coffee pot for brewing the next morning. She picked up the game pieces left on the table, put the phone back on the charger and put the telephone book into the drawer. She then washed her face with 3 in 1 cleanser, put on her night solution & age fighting moisturizer, brushed and flossed her teeth. Dad called out, "I thought you were going to bed." "IÂm on my way," she said. She put some water into the dogÂs dish and put the cat outside, then made sure the doors were locked and the patio light was on. She looked in on each of the kids and turned out their bedside lamps and TVÂs, hung up a shirt, threw some dirty socks into the hamper, and had a brief conversation with the one up still doing homework. In her own room, she set the alarm, laid out clothing for the next day and added three things to her 6 most important things to do list. About that time, Dad turned off the TV and announced to no one in particular. "IÂm going to bed." And he didÂ without another thought. Anything extraordinary here? Wonder why women live longerÂ? Âcause mothers are made for the long haul!

I've read that before; I was telling DH about it just the other night.

Part of the difference is, men are more likely to say what they mean. They'd never say "I'm going to bed" until AFTER they had fed the dog, etc.

My mother used to say she was too tired to go to bed, and would continue lounging on the couch. That article explains why!

Too funny and true! Don't know why this story reminded me of men and their out of town business trips but it did. For those married to men who travel, do they normally just say, "I'll be out of town from x to x"? Then they pack a simple bag and make their exit with zero fanfare. Now... have you, the wife/mother, ever had to go out of town when it is not normal for you to travel? Good Lord, the preparations required to make a short exit are crazy. LOL, I was always so exhausted from making sure the kids had what they needed to survive for a couple of days, babysitters scheduled, food available and/or prepared, lunch money ready, school projects handled, rules and regulations reviewed, etc. etc. ETC. Even had to make sure the pets were attended to. Then you leave and worry the entire trip because you know the house will absolutely fall apart without your presence and guidance. Awful!

Women ARE the hardest workers of all and are the true backbone of any family.

Marie26, do you live in Whitefish? DH and I took a trip in 1991 and stopped there. We took Amtrack to Seattle (from Ohio), stayed a week, then got on the train & got off in Whitefish, rented a car & went to Glacier National Park for a week, then took the train home. It's been my dream to live in Whitefish ever since. We had the most awsome meal in a diner there, a great breakfast after being on the train all night. I have so many great memories of Montana - that was our last big trip before my sons came along.

Mommabird, we took a small vacation to eastern British Columbia and ended up about an hour out of Calgary. We stopped in Whitefish for supper. On the way back, we stopped at Glacier.

We live about 45 minutes south of Missoula. Montana is a beautiful state but if you need to earn a real living, it doesn't pay well at all.

We've been discussing taking Amtrak from Whitefish to Seattle this fall.

I don't think I'd need as much $$ if I lived in Whitefish! I'd be so happy with the breathtaking views, I'd spend the day outside in the mountains every day.

DO take the train - it was so much fun. DH and I were saying today that we wish we could take the kids on a train trip - but it's pricey! The route to Seattle is beautiful!

Montana is one of my "happy places" I go in my mind when things get too overwhelming for me. I wouldn't trade the memories of that trip for $1M!

Have you ever read the book _This House Of Sky_ by Brian Doig? That book is what inspired me to want to go to Montana - great read!

I haven't read that book but I will definitely look for it.

Your "happy places" sounds like such a good way to let go of stressful times. My happy place would be Scotland. After we saw the movie "Local Hero", we took a road trip throughout Scotland just to see the town that the movie was filmed in.
