Sour Cherries???

Help!

We bought a house just over a year ago that has 3 sour cherry trees in the back yard. Last year I just let them drop to the ground and let the birds have at (shame on me), but this year I'm hoping to gather some.

Is anyone familiar with methods on freezing sour cherries. I don't have a vaccuum sealer, nor do I can. Do I need to pit them before freezing? Can I flash freeze on a cookie sheet then store in freezer bags?

Any and all help would be appreciated.

I freeze cherries. I wouldn't leave the pits in. I mix a little sugar with the pitted cherries and just freeze them in good sealing quart plastic containers. Then thaw and make a pie, using less sugar than called for.

I see this is from a few years ago but I am very worried about my Montmorency Cherry tree that is 8 years old. It has always produced bountiful cherries and this summer is no exception however, the leaves are turning yellow. Also, it has had a split in the trunk for many years that i’ve been concerned about but it has not effected the cherry crop.... Is there something I can do to help my tree?? Do sour cherries, pin cherries, or native plums stain cement etc?

Yes, you'll get some short-term staining, but it fades reasonably soon and is often masked by the normal dirt. Washing doesn't have as much effect as sun and time. (Plant-based colorants are notoriously fugitive.)

Of the tart cherries, the variety I am aware of with the lowest chill requirement comes from Iran; it is called Albaloo. It would be very happy in zone 9. (Supposedly good flavor but not the most edible flesh surrounding the pit) It is also possible to hybridize sweet cherry with tart cherry; the resulting mixed offspring will eventually develop fruit but the seeds inside that fruit will be sterile. (So what if you hybridized a low chill sweet cherry with Carmine Jewel?) You might also be interested in the cherry variety 'May Duke', if you can find it (the original one).

Sour cherries are much less finicky then sweet cherries and can be grown much easier. I've seen sweet cherry tree and sour side by side and birds would clean up the sweet cherries but hardly touch the sour ones, depend location and other food sources. Up here north I don't need to spray and get loads of sour cherries, birds rarely take any since there are lots of other native berries around like Saskatoon's and choke cherries they prefer.

Oh Holly, I envy you. I used to live in MI and really loved the sour cherries. I purchased a cherry pitter $15 at the hardware store. It was a hand crank thing where the seeds spit out one side and the mashed cherry out the other; then I made up 3 C. bags with cherries, flavoring, sugar, etc. for pies and some cherries were froze to make preserves in January or February. Happy memories!
