Comments (3)We have both the FoodSaver unit & the battery-powered HandiVac unit. The HandiVac, available in grocery stores, is good for items you want to remove part of & re-vacuum, like frozen strawberries for smoothies or frozen vegetables. However, using the HandiVac is tedious if you are vacuuming more than a bag or two. Our son hunts, & we've purchased a chest freezer for the bounty. We have the venison processed into various sausage products locally, and they come back to us frozen. These keep better if I vacuum pack them in the FoodSaver bags. The FoodSaver unit & rolls of bags are available at Sams Club & Costco. However, neither unit works with wet foods, because of the need to vacuum out the excess air. You must either pre-freeze the food, or use non-vac freezer bags or containers....See MoreLOOKING for: ? correct site Do you use a Tilla Food Saver
Comments (11)You put a piece of paper towel on top of the flour otherwise the vacuum would suck up the flour. It's really going to be a boon for hurricane season here since I can buy ahead if we get a bad storm. We have a massive generator so I don't have to worry about being without power for 3 months like during the last one. I don't have the canisters but think I'll get some of those to vacuum seal things too which will cut down on having to rely completely on bags. You might be able to get better prices at places like Costco which we don't have here but ebay is a good source too. I'll have to check to see if they sell the canisters there....See MoreFoodSaver - model recommendations anymore?
Comments (16)We bought the model that Costco sells now, thinking it was the heavy duty model that they used to sell. It just didn't have enough oomph...wouldn't seal anything the least bit moist. We returned it and ordered a GameSaver Turbo Plus. It has a pulse feature and a setting for moist foods. It wouldn't seal automatically so we sent it to FoodSaver and the replacement came the other day. It was a more expensive model, but it does a good job so far. It took me awhile to get the leftover containers to seal, but I finally figured out I hadn't snapped the lids on hard enough. And I couldn't get canning jar lids to seal until I used two, but they were used lids, so who cares if it takes two? And I saved a couple of wine bottles so I can buy bigger (cheaper) containers of olive oil. Nothing worse than rancid oil...it'll be the true test of the bottle stoppers, lol....See MoreSeasyde
