UtOH! Is the hamburger bad?

I went to the store in Friday night (930pm) and

bought a couple packs of hamburger. I wasnt able

to put it in the freezer until Sunday at noon ( I cut

it up into separate baggies). When I went to put it

into the freezer, I noticed that the top of the beef is a brown color. Is it bad now or

is it because the air got to it. Please help.

Nah....it's not bad...just a little air got to it. Does it smell bad....

Bad? ehhh well, beef never smells good to me. But it didnt make me gag or anything. It's pink on the inside.

Meyer Lemons are usually grafted, or rooted, but can be propagated by seed. When Meyer Lemon's are grown from seed they will usually come true from seed, or fairly close to their parent. Your relative's tree should produce good tasting fruit, either the same as your Meyer or very close to your tree. It takes 4+ years to fruit from seed, when grown outdoor in a warm climate like California or Florida. I've been busy in my greenhouse and garden ever since I posted last. One of those days from 8AM to 7PM was spent moving a cute old shed into my garden, and one was moving two kousa dogwoods that I had planted "temporarily" in my veg garden 3-4 years ago! ARRRGH!! Never again! AnnPat- Sorry you didn't have better luck at Fedco. I got there around 8:50 and they had already opened! We rushed in to try to get the bluberries and raspberries I wanted, but the varieties I wanted were gone. However, we were happy that lilacs and buddleias were 2 for one! I took my husband with me for the first time. He kept saying "look, this is a great deal, we should get some of these!" So I came home with more than I usually do. We got four regular lilacs (2 James MacFarlane, which I have been wanting to stretch out my season, a Japanese tree lilac, 2 Donald Wyman crabapples, and 2 buddleias. I also got more Fort-V potting soil, which I love but cannot get anywhere else except Johnny's, some bean seeds which were recommended to me recently and some other incidentals. I'll pre-order the bushes I really need next year. huisjen-Kudos to you for working to get a school garden going. Have you looked into the Master Apprentice Gardener program thru the extension service? It is aimed at the 3 & 4th graders and is an excellent place to start. Paulaj-looks like you may be the closest to me. I can't find my GMSII book, drat! It isn't Muriel Kragar's is it? I heard she moved. Back outside I go. What a day yesterday, eh?

shawnalyn- Perhaps this yeast test will come in handy for you - especially if you use yeast purchased in bulk amounts, don't use it frequently, and are uncertain of the strength of the yeast. Yeast Test: In a 1-cup glass measuring cup place 1-1/2 t. yeast, 1 t. sugar and 1/4 c. warm water. Wait 10 minutes. The mixture should be up to the 1/2 c. line if the yeast is active enough to raise bread dough. If you proof your yeast in water/sweetener for a recipe and you don't see good activity after 5\-10 minutes of proofing time, then there won't be enough "umph" in the yeast to raise bread dough and there's no sense continuing the recipe and wasting any more ingredients than the proofing mixture. And it's also an indication it's time for new yeast..... Be sure to add your yeast to the water, not water to yeast. Dumping the water on the yeast can actually "kill" or damage the yeast from the beating it takes from the water. If you actively stir the proofing mixture you can damage or kill the yeast. In one of his bread books, Bernard Clayton offers this advise: "If the dough refuses to rise, you may have forgotten the yeast or the yeast may have been outdated and dead. Don't throw the dough away. Start a new batch of dough but make certain the yeast \- in the amount specific in the recipe is among the ingredients. After the dough is mixed, blend the two doughs. There will be more than enough healthy yeast cells to go around. OR, dissolve the yeast in a small amount of water and work this into the dough. It will be a sticky mess in the beginning, but the yeast will be absorbed." \-Grainlady

We just had another tornado go thru here. I watched it on tv. It was northeast of the city and news was able to capture it. My son was near it so waiting to hear from him. Fingers crossed.

Dark on the outside and pink on the inside is a sign that bacteria got to the meat, pink on the outside and brown on the inside is a good sign. Plus I would never eat any meat that was in the fridge for more than 3 days. especially hamburger (at grocery stores burger it is often made with reduced price sale meat which of coarse is good (all I ever buy) but not for more than a day or two). I know all of this since my mother managed a major US meat company for 20 years.

I think it would be fine. We were at a party once and were talking to a meat inspector and he told us that the steak in the meat section that is browner is far better than the bright red one. We did not know that. It just means that it has cured longer.

BUT, here is the thing, for the cost of the hamburger, if you are not comfortable with it smell, looks or otherwise,
Throw it out. It has been my experience that it will spoil your whole meal by thinking about it when you cook it.

I know this is an old posting but I wanted to say that meat that is dark on the outside pink on the inside means the meat had oxidized with AIR, not that bacteria has gotten to it. The reason meat remains bright red in the package is the package is air tight. Many areas if the world would not even consider selling meat before it has oxidized.

I have cooked hamburger many times that has been in the refrigerator for several days and is brown on the outside. It has never been bad or spoiled.
