Once-a-Week Cooking

Okay ladies, what do I do now?

All right - I bought a small freezer yesterday, where do I go from here? I have started boiling the ground beef instead of browning it in a skillet, and now I'm ready to do the once a month cooking thing. I'm just not sure what do to first. Any suggestions will be more than appreciated!!!

My suggestions.. Start small...Instead of cooking for a month...cook for 1 week or two weeks. You could also choose to do a ground beef day or ckicken day etc instead of making both on the same day. There are many ways to tweak this plan.

check out all the oamc websites and this BB and read over the recipes....go through your recipes that you all normally like and you cook often. Choose the ones that will freeze well. Pick out a reasonable number of recipes. don't go overboard. For instance instead of cooking 10 separate ground beef recipes, it might be better to cook the gb and just have it frozen ready to use in different recipes.

Make a shopping list... plan how to occupy your children if you have little ones on cooking day...see if you can find a buddy who is interested in helping you...

Go shopping, put everything away and rest. Choose your cooking day and get ready.

Day before you cook (or evening) get ready and do those things that you can get done ahead of time...like chopping onions, peppers, etc. Get something started in the crockpot...two if you have them. Get as much rest as possible. Get your utensils out and ready...pots..bowls..colanders, large spoons etc...

Cooking day...Get an early start and try to cook things in order. If you are doing chicken that has to be cooked and cooled get it on right away. (Good for the night before crockpot). Very important...Clean as you go. f you have a teenager that can help...wonderful. Make a routine for yourself............

I'm with Ruthie on this one. My back gets to hurtin' so bad if I try to do too much at once. I try to pick the best meat deal at the grocery store for the week and but a lot of that. Then I cook it all up. Usually one thing for that night, and then a few more dishes for the freezer. I guess it is more batch cooking than OAMC, but it works for me. For example, if it is the ground beef, I will cook it all up (isn't that boiling great!) and maybe make some hamburger patties for dinner that night. I will either just package the cooked beef as is, or sometimes with add taco seasoning, spaghetti sauce, etc., before freezing. If it sounds like you have too much to do at once, then you probably do. Try this batch cooking, first, and then if you feel that you can do more, then go for it! Be sure to have all of your freezing containers ready, so that you can clear away the items as they are finished. And definately clean as you go. Unles you have 30 pans that can sit in the sink. Then you will have to have cleanup day after you finish--haha.

Sounds like you are making some good plans for a hardier brug with some color. Many german hyb. don't like CG and other yellows because she/they are prone to SB but many of us haven't had that problem as much here in the U.S, however when the german brugs start showing up more and more here-that may become an issue. I do love CG though! Ah SuS seems right for super spot..I went looking for the acronym but didnt find it but found that super pink is SuP and it seems that Shooting Star is indeed SS (from seedsprout's website under seed listings if you click on that cross) LOL.. I have to laugh at some of these acronyms too because, like you said, whether you are texting someone or also medical jargon, computer jargon etc...they all mean diff things LMAO! For example ADL can mean Adeline or Activities of Daily Living (in the medical field):

First you need to find out if your problem is actually Late Blight, or if it is something else. Thank you all for your support it means the world to me. I've always been the type to beat myself up for not knowing how to do the things just right. It would not be so bad if dad's mind wasn't clear as a bell right now. His abuse of his medicine is a real concern for me. I got a call from him today saying he needs his antibiotic for his sinus, well he'll only take one or two and he says it cures his sinus. You and I know this isn't so and even if it does help it's short term, taking the antibiotics like that can cause harm but no one can get this through to my dad. I have had so many problems with doctors in my past that I don't trust them easily. It was me that saved my husband from a possible stroke, his blood pressure was high and I could tell when it was up but with the sleep apne he had to take showed how bad it was. They could not get it down all night so I marched into our dr.'s and told them about this and they looked back at his chart and seen that it was high everytime he went in for a check up. Now why don't they pay more attention to this? This is why I fear looking for yet another doctor. I have no luck with them. Only once did I have a wonderful doctor and within a year my insurance changed and he didn't take it :( He was the one that listen to me about my weight and took test finding that my thyroid was bad. I went through years with a sore throat and my throat closing up at night in my sleep, waking up unable to breath for 10 or so seconds but felt longer and didn't know if I'd get my breath. If it's wasn't for y'all I don't know if I'd be able to be strong for my dad. I never knew it could be so hard. I look at pictures of my grandparents, dads parents and talk to them and wishing they were here. They had a hard life and I can just image that they went through just what I am now. They took care of my great grandmother for 17 years then told my grandmothers brother it was time for him to care for his mother and give them a break. Great grandmother was called little granny and I never seen pictures of her but heard great stories about her, I found a picture of her the other day and I'm so happy to finally seen her, she past away a few years before I was born. A/C Coil Iced Up, But Now Works Okay. Do I have a problem?

First, I would try replacing your filter of the high MERV type with a standard, cheap (throw away) type. See if that solves your problem. This you can do yourself. Sometimes, those filters are too restrictive and can decrease the airflow across your evaporator coil such that the thing ices up. Second, (and you may want to consult a professional on this--definitely, absolutely cut the power to the unit first!) is to check your blower compartment and see if it is extremely dirty (or if the evaporator coil is extremely dirty). These factors can prevent adequate airflow across your evaporator coil thus increasing the likelihood that it ices up. Another good thing to check is to see if your OUTDOOR coil on your condensing unit is clean. If the thing is plugged with leaves, hair, dirt, dead grass, etc...this isn't good either. Third, you want to have a professional check your refrigerant charge on your unit. If all other factors are eliminated, an icing coil typically means low refrigerant charge. If the refrigerant charge is correct, then the thing to do as a "try" would be to have the technician (or yourself if you are so qualified) to increase your blower speed. This will decrease the likelihood that your coil ices up. Another possibility could be (unlikely) a stuck TXV valve or plugged metering orifice or a pinched lineset. Please (by all means) consult a professional if you do not feel qualified or able to do these things. A service call is only 100 bucks to check it out.

Thanks for your advice, ladies!! I want to also thank all of you for making this forum so interesting. If fact, it wasn't until after I was lurking around one day and found this forum that I even thought about doing this!! Like I've said, I'm already into boiling the hamburger, etc. Thanks again!!!

I think the best advice is to just make it fun. Don't make it work. I get a real kick out of seeing those things going into the freezer and knowing they are there and waiting so I don't mind the cooking day at all. I am always tired but it gets easier after you have done it a few time. You will get a nice rythmn going and you will know what to do and in what order...make it fun...and don't forget to stop for lunch and the occasional cup of coffee.
