Plaster under paneling--how to...?

Howdy. My house isn't super old but it's a plaster issue so here I am. The house was built in the 1950s and has some original paneling that has been abused and painted. (Too bad, because it was cool stuff!)
I'm pretty sure there is plaster under the paneling. It's probably not pretty plaster. I would like to remove the paneling because it looks like dinged up paneling that was painted.
Would anyone have an educated guess on whether or not the plaster under the paneling might be salvageable? I don't know what to expect--but the inside of a nearby closet is less-than-presentable plaster as well. Could I hope for something this nice?:
