Does plank T&G subfloor need gaps between planks?

Hello,

A contractor just repaired a 3'x3' section of subflooring. It is T&G planks (not plywood). The original, unrepaired subfloor has gaps between each plank of about 1/8" or more. The new repaired section was put in with no gaps between the planks. I am worried that, with our humid summers, this lack of gaps will cause problems of buckling or at least loosening of the subfloor from the joists.

Does anyone know about the need for gaps with this older type of subfloor?

Thanks.
