Insuring a house during renovation

opphop

Seven years ago, when we bought a 100+ year old house, we used the same insurance company the previous owner of 50 years used. We knew the knob and tube wiring would mean trouble getting a policy through a new company.

Now that we are almost done with a 2 year long renovation, the replacement value of the home has about tripled. New wiring, new roof, new everything. This is not our primary residence (yet) and is unoccupied about two miles away in our very safe little town.

A year ago I called three insurance agencies to check on what kind of coverage we could buy during this unoccupied phase and I knew it would be expensive. All three agencies pretty much talked me out of it. I don't want to take chances anymore with so much sweat and cash having gone into this project. Does anyone have experience in an situation like this where you could share some wisdom? Thanks so much!
