kitchen remodel: 2- tiered wall cabinets

We are drawing up plans for our kitchen remodel. Our ceilings are 8.5'high. I like the look of smaller cabinets on top of the basic wall cabinets. We are going with inset doors. I would really appreciate hearing from those of you with similar kitchens:
1) what is the height of your upper cabinets?
2) what is the height of the basic wall cabinet?
3) how much space between your counter and the bottom of the basic wall cabinet?

Thank you!!

Hi,

We have almost 9 foot ceilings, and here's what we did:
1) top cabinets are 15"
2) basic wall cabinets are 38"
3) space between counter and wall cabinet is 16"

We don't have inset cabinets, so you might need to make some adjustments for that.

Of course, we can't reach the top cabinets or the top shelf of the wall cabinets without a step stool, but it's good for storage of rarely used things. The top cabinets are hinged near the ceiling and have something that allows them to stay open. We have seeded glass insets in the top cabinets and store vases and glass pitchers.

good luck!

You need to decide if you want a molding on top and how big. Typical setup with a 30" wall cabinet and an 18 gap above the counter leaves you with 17" for a cabinet and molding combination.

Good point about the molding. Our cabinets went flush to the ceiling without a molding, so I didn't think about that.

Have you been over to the Kitchen forum? They are experts at these kinds of questions... and probably will prompt WAY MORE questions than you ever dreamed you'd have! But, they are great with advice for planning a kitchen remodel.

We remodeled our kitchen 6 years ago.

Upper Cabinets are about 18"
Lower Cabinets are 38"
Space between counter and upper cabinets is 15"

Cabinets are made of quarter sawn oak with SW fruitwood stain. Counters are Silestone. Backsplash is Araldica Tile in Fossil.

Sorry I don't have more pictures posted. Have not reloaded since Yahoo photos closed. Photos were always bigger in Yahoo, but are very tiny in Flickr. ???

you can go to home depot and lowes give them the measurements of your room and the style cabinet you like and tell them to do their thing in designing the layout. I found this to be helpful. they also give you a print out of the layout, views of all angles of the room and a list of the cabinets and supplies you need to accomplish your look, then head on over to the kitchen forum here and look at pictures. the service at lowes and home depot is free. i think sears will come out but i have not even asked them to because i hate them. the measurements you need are: the total wall length, the distance of each door and window from each side of the room, the height of each, the distance of the windows from the floor and where your sink and electrical outlets are located. also I have seen like new kitchens fully taken apart on craigs list for about $500. rich people who don't want the builders cabinets and just want to get rid of them. of course you need a truck to haul them.

We are beginning the process of remodeling our kitchen and I have a feeling it is going to be a nightmare.

The ceilings are 12'. I want to have really tall cabinets with display space on the top but cannot decide what is a realistic height to go for.

Anything above "normal" height is going to require a ladder anyway so we figure why waste that overhead space.

do you have an update for us?

I have a house in town, presently up for sale. It has those lovely high ceilings found in pre-1900's homes and the folks who owned it before me dummied in the space over the top of the cabinets. My daughter lived in that house for several years before I decided to turn it over and it's a small home. I can't tell you how I detested the fact that space was wasted. It would have been better left open than dummied in, but would have been wonderful with a smaller unit above the standard sized cabinets. Storage, storage, storage and display!

I have a huge kitchen in my old house, with cabinets everywhere, but I'm also a cook. It is all used. One can never have enough storage in a kitchen. Ever!
