insulate over wall

Have an odd situation: Old owners built into the barn, used 4 inch studs on an exterior (in unheated barn) wall, tossed up some fiberglass insulation (not even attached), then covered it over with tongue-and-groove boards using square-headed nails. So basically the wall is:

interior drywall - horribly applied insulation - covered with tongue-and -groove boards (creating the exterior wall).

These walls need more insulation, but I had a bear of a time trying to get one board off as it totally splintered (never did get the entire board off).

Am wondering if I can insulate over this exterior wooden wall. Anyone ever heard of doing this, and if so, hear of any good or bad results??

Thanks.
