Plank walls under panels?

Yesterday we were blessed to buy a 1940s home! Today in one of the bathrooms we found horizontal wood slats behind some hideous blue butterly panels. I orignally thought that was wallpaper but now I realize it is actually a panel type material. My husband says instead of painting over the paneling why not just take it down and paint the wood slats. I'm afraid of what that really is and if we should do that with the humidity that would be ina bathroom.....
Can someone tell me about this type of wall and what is probably our best bet to do.

PS We found almost brand new hardwoods under the filthy shag carpeting so I'm so not complaining about this....

I have a porch ceiling and a short section of wall in the basement of my 1940 house that I thought was covered with beaded board. However, when I took down the wall in the basement I discovered it appears to be made of the 3" wide, and about 3/4" thick tongue and groove wood strips that we now use for flooring.

My house has hardwood on all the exposed floors, and only the kitchen had linoleum over 3" wide pine flooring. I think they may have had quite a bit of leftover pine floor flooring and decided to use it for other purposes. Your wall may have had a similar "re-purposing" of left-over materials.
