Plaster wall - texture or mistake?

Moved into a 1960 ranch. All the plaster walls have tiny nubs, and the nubs are different sizes. I think it was a design choice and not a mistake, but I can't figure out what kind of finish it is. Excessive Googling has introduced me to many types of plaster texture and many ways to texture plaster, but none seem quite close enough to this.)

ETA: I know this house isn't particularly old, but I figured this forum waws the best place for a plaster question. Let me know if this forum is inappropriate.)

I want to paint, and I thought maybe I would just sand down some obvious (to me) wall repairs and add a matching texture. Again, that would require me knowing what kind of texture it is. Any ideas?
