wooden storms and sash stays

We kept the wooden storms and screens on our c. 1837 home in the interest of authenticity and preservation. (plus they're sweet as all-get-out).
However, we're not getting any younger, and the windows are quite large and heavy. We only put up one screen in each room every summer, but it's not fun, especially the second story.
I've just ordered some sash stays online, and want to try propping open the wooden storms and using expanding screens instead of doing battle with the windows.
I'm concerned about how safe and stable the storms are if it gets windy. The hanging hardware has smallish hooks, and I'm afraid the wind could pull the window off the hardware.
Any experience with this? Obviously, if we're expecting a huge storm, I'd close them, but if I'm not home or something...
thanks
Jo
