Crumbly concrete

Wondering if anyone has a suggestion: We have a basement and we recently remodeled our kitchen and incorporated the concrete stairs to the basement (House built in 1906 - California) into the new kitchen area. We like the texture that the stairs add to the space, but the walls are kind of crumbly. I don't think there are any structural issues, but I'd like to keep the crumbling to a minimum - just to keep the space clean. Is there anything I can apply to the concrete that will keep it from crumbling but will not cover it up? Again, I like the texture/industrial feel of the material - just not the mess. Thanks.
