| I'm going to be doing some repainting of outdoor steps, which are covered with latex paint, and there are some bare spots I need to re-prime.
I know that latex can go on oil or water based primer, but I was wondering if oil based primers can go on latex? I figure they can, but just want to be sure. Thanks. |

| yes, as long as the original paint is adhering well |
|
| Not prefered. Oil (alkyd) paint dry to a stiffer and harder film than latex. Putting a harder fil over a softer film invites cracking of the harder film from movement of the softer layer underneath. Just spot prime with latex. |

| It's a primer, not a finish coat |

| "It's a primer, not a finish coat" It is still harder and stiffer. |
